The Fundamental Misunderstanding of Context in an AI World

Google spent twenty years trying to infer who you are. LLMs already know.
That single shift breaks most of what businesses think they understand about getting recommended by AI, and the teams that miss it keep optimizing for a problem that no longer exists.
Google Was Always Guessing
When you search "denim jeans" on Google, you get a mix of ads, product pages, listicles, and blog posts. That noise exists because Google starts with a fragment: two words with no context behind them.
Google closes that gap through inference. It uses your IP, logged-in profile, browsing history, tracking pixels, and device signals. It builds a portfolio on you from the outside in, trying to map a keyword to an intent it can only approximate.
If Google does not know your profile or intent clearly, it serves broad results. The system is sophisticated, but it is still a guessing engine.
The business implication was simple: get content in front of the keyword, hope the signals align, and capture whatever traffic comes.
LLMs Don't Guess - They Already Know
An LLM is not trying to infer who you are from scratch. It has context from the conversation, preferences you have shared, and constraints already in memory.
So when someone asks ChatGPT for the best denim jeans, the model is not just pattern-matching a keyword. It is answering for a specific person with a specific history.
Two people can ask the same question and get different responses. That is not inconsistency. That is context doing real work.
This is the structural shift: Google optimized for traffic and visibility. LLMs optimize for outcomes. The goal is not to surface links. The goal is to close the gap between user need and provider fit.
Why Content Alone Fails
Most businesses reacted to the LLM shift the same way they reacted to early SEO: add more content. More FAQs, more docs, more prompt-targeted landing pages.
But content is a flat list of answers. It does not tell a model when you are the right answer.
Context is relational. It connects who the user is, what they are trying to do, and why your business fits that situation better than alternatives.
If all you publish is content without context, the model cannot map your business to outcomes with confidence. That is the gap between being indexed and being recommended.
The Question Most Businesses Haven't Asked
Google trained the market to ask: "What keywords am I targeting?"
The better question now is: "In what context does my business become the correct answer?"
That is not a content question. It is a positioning question. Answering it clearly and consistently, in language a model can extract and use, is the core work of LLM visibility.
The companies that solve this early will not just appear in AI answers. They will become the answer.
